SMARTBLOCK®: lightweight blocks for insulating masonry
SMARTBLOCK® is ESB’s masonry block system designed for opaque façade walls and internal partitions. Six densities and eight thicknesses cover every need: from the highly insulating single-layer infill wall to the sound-insulating wall between two dwellings, up to load-bearing masonry.
Six densities, one logic.
Lighter means more insulating; denser means stronger and more sound-insulating. Each density has its own page with every thickness, the data sheets and the specification text.
What a SMARTBLOCK® block is made of
It is a category II vibro-compressed concrete masonry unit, CE-marked to EN 771-3. The mix combines cement and virgin expanded polystyrene beads (Politerm® Blu and Blu Fein, 3 to 6 mm) treated to bond with the binder; from the 450 density upwards, graded aggregates are added.
The blocks are solid (0% voids), 20 cm high and 100, 50 or 25 cm long depending on thickness and density. They have vertical tongue-and-groove joints, which reduce thermal and acoustic bridges between blocks, and hand grips for handling.

How to read the code
Each item has a name like B.33.300: the first number is the thickness in centimetres, the second the density in kg/m³.
B.33.300
■ thickness 33 cm ■ density 300 kg/m³
The six densities compared
Values for the wall with 1.5 cm of traditional plaster on each side, from the thinnest to the thickest block.
| Density | Equivalent λ | Compression | Wall U | Calculated Rw | Thicknesses | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 300 kg/m³ | 0.080 W/mK | 0.40 N/mm² | 1.049 → 0.153 W/m²K | 38–51 dB | 6–50 cm | The most insulating density, for single-layer infill walls. |
| 450 kg/m³ | 0.094 W/mK | 0.40 N/mm² | 1.188 → 0.181 W/m²K | 39–53 dB | 6–50 cm | High insulation, with more mass and a longer time lag. |
| 600 kg/m³ | 0.1104 W/mK | 2.00 N/mm² | 1.339 → 0.211 W/m²K | 41–55 dB | 6–50 cm | A balance of insulation, strength and acoustics. |
| 750 kg/m³ | 0.1592 W/mK | 4.00 N/mm² | 1.724 → 0.299 W/m²K | 42–56 dB | 6–50 cm | The first sound-insulating density: partitions and walls between units. |
| 900 kg/m³ | 0.1839 W/mK | 5.50 N/mm² | 1.900 → 0.343 W/m²K | 43–56 dB | 6–50 cm | Load-bearing from 15 cm, with thermal and sound insulation. |
| 1200 kg/m³ | 0.2289 W/mK | 5.50 N/mm² | 2.148 → 0.513 W/m²K | 45–56 dB | 6–40 cm | The density with the most mass: load-bearing and sound-insulating. |
Rw values are calculated with acoustic software for a wall plastered on both sides (ESB catalogue 11/2022), not measured in a laboratory.

Fire resistance
Classes of the ESB range according to Italian Ministerial Decree 16/02/2007 and the Fire Prevention Code (Ministerial Decree 03/08/2015), for walls up to 4 m high.
| Class | Minimum thickness |
|---|---|
| EI 60 | 80 mm |
| EI 90 | 100 mm |
| EI 120 | 150 mm |
| EI 180 | 200 mm |
| EI 240 | 240 mm |
Why choose it
Insulates throughout its mass
The block is solid: insulation does not rely on air cavities or inserts.
Lightweight
Less load on structures and foundations, blocks that are easier to handle and less weight to transport.
Non-combustible
Euroclass A2-s1,d0 for every density and fire resistance up to EI 240.
Fast
Tongue-and-groove joints, hand grips and large formats: the wall goes up quickly.
Workable
Cut with angle grinders, circular saws and band saws; service chases are made with wall chasers.
Breathable
Vapour permeable (µ from 12 to 21) and compatible with cement, gypsum-based and thermal plasters.
