- Di cosa sono fatti i blocchi SMARTBLOCK®? Di calcestruzzo alleggerito: cemento e perle vergini di polistirene espanso (Politerm® Blu e Blu Fein, da 3 a 6 mm) additivate per legarsi al cemento. Dalla densità 450 in su l’impasto contiene anche inerti a granulometria controllata. I blocchi sono pieni, vibrocompressi, di categoria II e marcati CE secondo UNI EN 771-3.
- Quanto isola una parete in SMARTBLOCK®? Dipende da densità e spessore. Con la densità 300 e 1,5 cm di intonaco tradizionale per lato: 20 cm danno U 0,358 W/m²K, 33 cm U 0,227 W/m²K e 50 cm U 0,153 W/m²K. La verifica rispetto ai limiti di legge va fatta sul progetto, per la zona climatica dell’edificio.
- Quali densità sono portanti? Le densità 900 e 1200 kg/m³, che hanno una resistenza media a compressione di 5,5 N/mm². Le schede tecniche le indicano per murature portanti dallo spessore di 15 cm. Le densità da 300 a 750 sono per tamponamenti, divisori e contropareti.
- Con quale malta si posano? Il primo corso su malta cementizia, per livellare; tutti i corsi successivi con Malta Block 600, la malta termica EN 998-2 classe M2,5 con λ 0,158 W/mK, che evita di creare un ponte termico nel giunto.
- Come si legge il codice B.33.300? Il primo numero è lo spessore in centimetri (33 cm), il secondo la densità in kg/m³ (300). La gamma ha 6 densità (300, 450, 600, 750, 900, 1200) e 8 spessori (6, 10, 15, 20, 25, 33, 40, 50 cm); la densità 1200 arriva a 40 cm, per 47 articoli in tutto.
- Come si comportano al fuoco? Tutte le densità sono in Euroclasse A2-s1,d0 di reazione al fuoco. Per la resistenza al fuoco il catalogo ESB indica EI 60 da 80 mm, EI 90 da 100 mm, EI 120 da 150 mm, EI 180 da 200 mm ed EI 240 da 240 mm, per pareti alte fino a 4 m.
- Che isolamento acustico hanno? Il potere fonoisolante Rw calcolato va da 38 dB (densità 300, 6 cm) a 56 dB (densità 750, 900 e 1200 negli spessori maggiori), su parete intonacata sui due lati. Sono valori di calcolo, non misure di laboratorio.
- Quanti blocchi servono per un metro quadro? 5 blocchi con lo spessore da 6 cm (lunghi 1 m), 10 con i blocchi lunghi 50 cm e 20 con i blocchi lunghi 25 cm, che sono i formati delle densità più pesanti negli spessori maggiori.
- Quanto velocemente si posano? Il catalogo ESB indica, a titolo indicativo, circa 65 m² di parete al giorno con il blocco da 33 cm. I tempi reali dipendono dal cantiere.
- Si possono tagliare e fare le tracce? Sì. Si tagliano con flessibili, seghe circolari e seghe a nastro, come la segatrice ESB.ATHENA.515; le tracce per gli impianti si fanno con scanalatrici a fresa o a disco e si sigillano con Malta Block 600.
- Che intonaci si possono usare? Intonaco cementizio, cementizio fibrato, a base gesso (solo interno), termointonaco Isolteco® di Edilteco (consigliato all’esterno) e rasature armate tipo Ecap® ADP, seguendo le indicazioni del manuale di posa.
- Quanta Malta Block 600 serve? Un sacco da 50 litri posa circa 5 m² di muratura. Ogni sacco si impasta con 15–18 litri d’acqua; la malta si applica tra +5 °C e +35 °C.
- Come si fanno porte e finestre? Con architravi armati per aperture fino a 3,00 m, appoggiati 25 cm per lato. Falsi telai e cardini si fissano con malte cementizie o resine chimiche.

Malta Block 600 is a pre-mixed mortar made of selected hydraulic binders and virgin EPS beads of 2–3 mm. It weighs about 600 kg/m³ when dry and has a conductivity of 0.158 W/mK: it is the laying mortar of the SMARTBLOCK® system and suits any masonry in insulating clay blocks or lightweight concrete blocks.

- What are SMARTBLOCK® blocks made of? Lightweight concrete: cement and virgin expanded polystyrene beads (Politerm® Blu and Blu Fein, 3 to 6 mm) treated to bond with cement. From the 450 density upwards the mix also contains graded aggregates. The blocks are solid, vibro-compressed, category II and CE-marked to EN 771-3.
- How well does a SMARTBLOCK® wall insulate? It depends on density and thickness. With the 300 density and 1.5 cm of traditional plaster on each side: 20 cm gives U 0.358 W/m²K, 33 cm U 0.227 W/m²K and 50 cm U 0.153 W/m²K. Compliance with local energy requirements must be checked on the project.
- Which densities are load-bearing? The 900 and 1200 kg/m³ densities, which have an average compressive strength of 5.5 N/mm². The data sheets indicate them for load-bearing masonry from a thickness of 15 cm. Densities from 300 to 750 are for infill walls, partitions and lining walls.
- Which mortar are they laid with? The first course on cement mortar, for levelling; all following courses with Malta Block 600, the EN 998-2 class M2.5 thermal mortar with λ 0.158 W/mK, which prevents the joint from becoming a thermal bridge.
- How do I read the code B.33.300? The first number is the thickness in centimetres (33 cm), the second the density in kg/m³ (300). The range has 6 densities (300, 450, 600, 750, 900, 1200) and 8 thicknesses (6, 10, 15, 20, 25, 33, 40, 50 cm); the 1200 density goes up to 40 cm, for 47 items in total.
- How do they perform in a fire? All densities are Euroclass A2-s1,d0 for reaction to fire. For fire resistance the ESB catalogue gives EI 60 from 80 mm, EI 90 from 100 mm, EI 120 from 150 mm, EI 180 from 200 mm and EI 240 from 240 mm, for walls up to 4 m high.
- What sound insulation do they provide? The calculated sound reduction index Rw ranges from 38 dB (300 density, 6 cm) to 56 dB (750, 900 and 1200 densities in the largest thicknesses), for a wall plastered on both sides. These are calculated values, not laboratory measurements.
- How many blocks per square metre? 5 blocks with the 6 cm thickness (1 m long), 10 with the 50 cm-long blocks and 20 with the 25 cm-long blocks, which are the formats of the heavier densities in the larger thicknesses.
- How fast are they laid? The ESB catalogue indicates about 65 m² of wall a day with the 33 cm block, as a guide. Actual times depend on the site.
- Can they be cut and chased? Yes. They are cut with angle grinders, circular saws and band saws, such as the ESB.ATHENA.515 saw; chases for services are made with wall chasers and sealed with Malta Block 600.
- Which plasters can be used? Cement plaster, fibre-reinforced cement plaster, gypsum plaster (inside only), Edilteco’s Isolteco® thermal plaster (recommended outside) and reinforced skim coats such as Ecap® ADP, following the installation manual.
- How much Malta Block 600 do I need? One 50-litre bag lays about 5 m² of masonry. Each bag is mixed with 15–18 litres of water; the mortar is applied between +5 °C and +35 °C.
- How are doors and windows made? With reinforced lintels for openings up to 3.00 m, bearing 25 cm on each side. Sub-frames and hinges are fixed with cement mortar or chemical resin.
